Rick Fowlkes from Mesa is the first to throw his hat in the ring for Corporate Commission in 2008. He ran as a Libertarian candidate the past two elections with a respectable showing in 2006. Now he is running as a Republican. His platform includes expanding the boundaries of the markets in which utilities are allowed to operate to allow for some competition and choice for consumers. He is opposed to mandates on utilities that restrict options for providing power to consumers (a good position in light of the California power shortage fiasco). Fowlkes owns a consulting engineering firm—his undergraduate degree is in civil/structural engineering and he has an MBA degree.
Rumors have been circulating that state legislator Marian McClure is also considering a run for the Corporate Commission although she has yet to file.
